For those interested in putting on a fundraiser, the
point of contact is our Executive Director, Matt Alsante. Please contact

Because of the grassroots nature of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, we are
relying on your local ingenuity to develop ideas for fundraising for sarcoma
research. But rest assured that we will help facilitate your efforts so that you
can have a successful event! Possible fundraising ideas can range from a
lemonade stand, garage sale, carwash, collection of items for recycling,
organization of a local run/walk, or hosting of a dinner at home, to the staging
of larger events like golf tournaments. As we grow, the events will surely grow!
Imagine what could be accomplished if all 50,000 American sarcoma survivors held
similar fundraisers...

There will be a 5K Run/Walk for the Cure at 7:30 am at Central Park in Plantation, Florida, which is in the Fort Lauderdale area. The Maxx Kearns Tribute Show on May 24, 2003 in Livermore, California was a great success! Over two hundred people turned out for the show to remember Maxx, hear great music, and raise funds for sarcoma research. The organizers hope to make it an annual event.

Leadville Trail 100-Mile Ultramarathon
The race begins at 4:00a.m. on August 19 and ends at 10:00a.m. on August 20, 2006. It is known as "The Race Across the Sky," named after the elevation of the Leadville, Colorado course, which start a little over 10,000 feet and climbs to 12,600 as the runners go over Hope Pass, approximately 40 miles from Leadville. 50 miles out and 50 miles back over some of Colorado's beautiful high country, the Race is the highest 100 mile race in the U.S., perhaps in the world.
Norm Creel is running the race for pledges tied to the miles he completes in memory of his wife who died in December 2005 after a two-year struggle with sarcoma.
Contact Norm at nrcreel@hotmail.com, and he will send you an e-mail after completing the race to let you know how many miles he ran within the 30 hour time limit. All donations go straight to the SFA.

Break the Silence
July is Sarcoma Awareness Month and great things are happening in Connecticut's Chapter. Recently the Connecticut Chapter held an event sponsored by the Sarcoma Foundation of America at Devil's Den on June 2008 called Break the Silence: Hike for the Cure. We raised awareness and also raised much needed funds for research. .
On Saturday, July 19, 2008, the Connecticut Chapter will have the following event.

Swim For Sarcoma
The Swim for Sarcoma Event was an unbelievable success. Initial reports are that it raise over $29,000 on July 31st. The Tokeneke Club sponsored the swim-a-thon in honor of Steve Close, a member who was diagnosed with liposarcoma. Swimmers, divers, parents, club members and friends all had a wonderful time.

Tour to Cure Bike Ride
The “Tour to Cure” is a beautiful ride through the Amish countryside during the “chore hour.” The course difficulty is moderate and the less experienced rider is encouraged to participate in the 18 mile route (or less). More experienced riders may enjoy the 27 or 33 mile route or longer. The routes will be marked per mile and riders may choose to turn around at any point to return to Hills Park. Team formation and competition to raise donations are highly encouraged.
There will be food, fun, and entertainment by "Sidewinder" and the Youth Bike Parade!

5th Annual Golfers Against Cancer Tournament
Registration is still open for the 5th Annual "Golfers Against Cancer, Columbus" Golf Outing. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available.
Golfers Against Cancer was created in 2001 after the death of Shannon Casey Mers from Osteosarcoma. Shannon was an avid golfer and asked that a memorial outing be established to raise research money specifically for Osteosarcoma, the bone cancer that took her young life.

2007 Team Sarcoma Bike Tour
Team Sarcoma 2007 is a Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative project. Sojourn is coordinating the Team Sarcoma 2007 Bike Tour. On July 14th, the cyclists forming Team Sarcoma 2007 will meet in Burlington, Vermont to begin a week-long, inn-to-inn tour that will include stays in the towns of Middlebury and Stowe, as well North Hero in the Lake Champlain Islands.
The event is targeted to draw cyclists from countries all over the world, including sarcoma patients, caregivers, physicians, friends, families, and those concerned about sarcoma. Team Sarcoma 2006 in Denmark drew over 100 participants. We anticipate cyclists from many countries as sarcoma knows no borders.
