Dr. Thornton is co-founder and volunteers as President of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, Inc. and is Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer at ZIOPHARM Oncology. He received his MD and PhD from West Virginia University and his Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. As a Clinical Pharmacologist and Trialist, Dr. Thornton has divided his 20-year career in the FDA and in the biotechnology industry equally between oncology and infectious disease biologics clinical development. At the FDA he was part of the approval team for Erbitux and published on the topic of optimizing regulatory pathways for cancer vaccines. In industry, Dr. Thornton has performed Phase I-III clinical trials in both oncology and infectious disease settings. As a Patient advocate he has also published Op-Eds in the Wall Street Journal on the need for regulatory reform at the FDA to streamline the approval processes for drugs for rare cancers.
