Jennifer Lenora Stephens-Kite, or “Jenji” as our family calls her, is a tall, beautiful, intelligent, outspoken, inspirational young woman. In October of 2005, five months after graduating Humble High School, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. The tumor was found in her right knee about 4 inches in diameter. Immediately following her diagnosis she was checked in to MD Anderson where her life changed dramatically.
Jennifer went through six months of intense chemotherapy which made her infertile. After the first couple rounds of chemo her health significantly deteriorated. She lost a vast amount of weight, developed shingles, had trouble breathing, and a constant fever over 100 degrees. Though painful, she courageously fought to survive. In early April of 2006, she was stable enough for surgery in hopes to remove the tumor. Hours later the doctors came out and said the surgery was a success and the tumor was 99.9% removed. They replaced the bone in her leg with a metal rod that stretches from her mid thigh to mid shin and a total knee replacement. This forces her to stay inside most cold winters with a leg brace. Following Jen’s surgery she participated in a research study for the drug immother (im-thur), developed to prevent Sarcoma from returning anywhere in the body. That too was a success.
As of today she is five years in remission, healthier then ever, and happily married to her high school sweetheart, David Kite. Even though she will never be able to have her own children and will struggle with leg pains for the rest of her life, she’s grateful to say she fought the battle with Sarcoma and won. All proceeds will go to Sarcoma Foundation of America to help find a cure.
Her loving sister,
Stephanie E. Stephens
