Hartford Half Marathon in honor of Daniel Haddad

Oct 15, 2011 • Connecticut

I (Haytham Zohny) am running the Hartford Half Marathon in honor of Daniel Haddad, a man whose life was cut too short—at the young age of 26—by Sarcoma, but whose life remains an inspiration to those who knew him and to those who have never met him. Danny was loved by everyone he came across, as he dedicated his life to his faith and to giving others as much of his humor, life, and love as he could give. He was truly a selfless person who was there for his friends and family and gave of him self not expecting anything in return. His life was rooted in faith and love. Danny was a man of courage, and he fought his cancer until the last day. His presence in this world is missed, but his spirit, his message, and his inspiration still live on. Throughout his ordeal, Danny maintained a blog, http://www.danielhaddad.org, and I invite you to read it to get to know the Danny that many have loved—the humorous, loving, compassionate, courageous, and giving individual. Even when he knew he had only weeks to live, he continued to fight, keeping his faith, and continuing to give as much as he could to the people he loves. Danny was only 26 years old when he passed, but his memory forever lives on.
I wish to honor this humble and lovely individual by giving to the Sarcoma Foundation of America, and in so doing help fight the disease that has claimed the lives of many beautiful people. My goal is to raise $1,300—that is $100 per mile that I will run; would you please consider sponsoring one of my miles? Your donation and contribution to this campaign is appreciated immensely!

A tribute to Arthur Perbohner, Chicago Marathon

Oct 09, 2011 • Illinois

Ten years ago my father,  Arthur Perbohner, lost his life to a sarcoma called epithelioid angiosarcoma.  Although, he was a giant of a man, both in size and presence, within 3 months of diagnosis, he slipped away quickly and quietly from this deadly disease. Someone, who had always filled a room with his personality, and knowledge about politics, travel, food, books and people, had left us with only empty space and broken hearts.

He loved my mother, Thelma, whom he truly admired and respected long before women’s rights were even acknowledged. He was an amazing dad, who had high expectations for his children growing up and relished and supported their professional lives as they became adults. He had an uncanny ability to relate to everyone and cherished his relationships with all his friends; friends he continued to make even up until the day he died. He loved listening to people tell their stories.  Although, he was not a wealthy man, he was always generous to those less fortunate than himself and if he could not help financially, he would give his time. Husband, father, uncle and friend, the role he probably loved the most was as “Boom Boom”, grandpa to his nine grandchildren.
On the 10th anniversary of Arthur’s death he remains very much alive in our hearts.  This year Bob (Art’s son-in-law) and the family has put together Team Art as Bob runs his 10th consecutive Chicago Marathon with Art’s granddaughter, Rachel.

We wish to honor him, by contributing to the Sarcoma Foundation of America and in so doing, help fight this deadly disease. Your donation is greatly appreciated.

Infinite Insanity

Sep 16, 2011 • New Hampshire

We’re Insane! (about Supporting the SFA!)

Who are we?  We are the 12 person relay team otherwise known as Infinite Insanity (or I2).

Why the name? The “Infinite” part our name is due to the fact that 10 of us work at Infinity Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, MA, an innovative drug discovery and development company dedicated to discovering, developing and delivering to patients best-in-class medicines for difficult-to-treat diseases, including cancer.  The “Insanity” part of our name also comes from the fact that 10 of us work at Infinity Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, MA (hey, we’re insanely passionate about what we do!).

What are we doing? On September 16th and 17th 2011 Infinite Insanity will be “competing” in the Reach the Beach Relay, which is a 200 mile race in New Hampshire from Canon Mountain to Hampton Beach.  The relay race starts on Friday, and continues all through the night finishing sometime the next afternoon.  The total time from start to finish is typically in the range of 27-33 hours.  Each runner runs 3 times (or legs) and the 3-leg totals range from 14 to 22 miles.

Why do we do this?  We run lots of miles, sit for hours in a smelly van, get very little sleep and then repeat it all over again twice! (Run, Rest, Repeat, as they say).  We agree it sounds pretty insane, but actually it’s a lot of fun.  And the truth is its nothing compared to what cancer patients and their families go through so we are grateful for the opportunity to help The Sarcoma Foundation in their quest to find new cures for this dreadful disease.

How can you help?  To make a donation in support of this great cause just click on the “Make a Donation” link above and follow the steps as indicated.  Your contribution will be added to the running total so we can monitor how we’re doing on our fundraising goals.

Your help insanity is greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

LiveForToday
A Tribute to Linda G. Martinowich
May 29, 2010

Linda G. Martinowich, 50, lived in Middlesex, NJ with Mark, her husband of 19 years, and her daughter Jessica.  Linda, daughter of Antonio and Monique Sasso, was born on May 19, 1960 along with her twin sister Sylvia. She was also a sister to Norma. She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada but at the age of 10 years old her family emigrated to Middlesex where she lived the rest of her life.  Linda was fluent in both French and English.

In the late part of 2007, a nodule was found in Linda’s left side of the neck.  After many scans and biopsies, in April of 2008 she was diagnosed with Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma.  Upon further scans, it was discovered that Linda had multiple lesions in her lungs, a large tumor on her heart and in her left thigh. In the summer of 2008, Doctors from the Pennsylvania University Hospital performed open-heart surgery to remove the tumor from her right ventricle.  In September Linda again underwent surgery at The University of Pennsylvania to remove the tumor in her jaw.  The doctors reconstructed her jaw using her fibula as a vascularized bone graft.  In the early part of 2010, it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized to the brain.  Linda underwent radiation therapy to reduce the effects of the tumor.  After a 2½ year battle, Linda died at home surrounded by her loving family.

Linda’s passions were her family and home life.  She was an excellent cook and was always ready to help anyone in need.  Throughout her life Linda was a gentle and caring soul.  She had a strong faith that carried her through all of her ordeals.  Linda is greatly missed by her family and her many friends.

Through your purchase of LiveForToday items at cafe press you will be further supporting the mission of LiveForToday Organization.  This mission is to raise money to provide alternative treatment to the mind, body and soul for sarcoma patients and provide a supportive environment for the everyday needs of the patient and caregivers.

Thank you for considering a donation in Linda’s name to the Sarcoma Foundation of America so we can find more treatments and a cure for this horrible disease.

60 years old and Fabulous, Virginia Jean Duque

Aug 05, 2011 • New York

Virginia “Jean” Corpuz Duque, was diagnosed with stage 4 Sarcoma cancer on Oct 18, 2010.  Before cancer, Jean was a physically strong woman, continuously working two jobs and providing for her family.  She constantly put others’ needs before hers, giving whatever she could.  Her battle with this disease is still ongoing which has claimed her physical strength but has not claimed her spirit. It is the love and support from family and friends and her unwavering faith in God that stand as her backbone fighting through these times of trials.

On August 5th, she will be turning the beautiful age of 60 and as a gift, the family would like to have donations made in her honor. Stand with Jean and her family in this fight against this aggressive and insistent disease.

Please donate to celebrate Jean’s life and to find a cure to end this suffering.
